LASTING COMMUNITY CHANGE THROUGH PHILANTHROPIC LEADERSHIP
United Way Tocqueville Society
The Tocqueville Society, a global membership organization of community leaders and philanthropists, embodies Alexis de Tocqueville’s belief that in order to create a vibrant civil society people must join forces for a mutual purpose, both in the public and private sector. Locally, United Way of Metro Chicago Tocqueville Society members are civic-minded leaders and change-makers who are committed to extending that belief as they address the greatest needs across the Chicago region.
“America has a long and rich tradition of generosity that began with simple acts of neighbor helping neighbor.”
— Alexis de Tocqueville, French political thinker and historian (1805–1859)
“Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood… Make big plans…Aim high in hope and work.”
— Daniel Burnham, Architect, Urban Designer and Chicagoan (1846-1912)
