Success Stories: Christine’s Story

When Christine was released from federal prison, she found the world outside very overwhelming. She was struggling to find full-time employment and was unable to navigate through her financial challenges. Her background made it very difficult to secure job interviews and she was having a hard time developing her resume.

Christine was not ready to give up. A friend told her about Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC), a United Way partner agency. JARC is a center for working individuals that focuses on job training and workforce development. JARC’s job training programs target strategic skills gaps in the manufacturing sector, such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinist and welder.

JARC was able to provide Christine with a full time job as a machinist. She learned to read blueprints and write programs and found that she very much enjoyed the manufacturing industry. JARC helped Christine to write her resume and helped her with interview skills. They also helped her get her credit score up and her finances back on track. Christine was also facing the struggle of adjusting to life outside of prison and a JARC counselor was able to help her find her way back into a normal routine.

No one agency or organization can solve the problems of joblessness and poverty alone. Through partnerships with funders, service providers, government and business leaders, United Way and Jane Addams Resource Corporation are able to make sure educational and employment opportunities exist for all of our community members. In 2013, United Way invested $3.8 million in 68 agencies across the region that provide high quality workforce and economic development services to communities and people who will benefit from them the most.
