Good health influences everything from how well a child is able to learn in the classroom to how much an adult is able to earn in the workplace. By keeping all of our neighbors physically and mentally healthy, we will improve educational outcomes, job performance and create more resilient families.

For too many of our neighbors, good health—including access to quality and affordable mental and physical health services—is out of reach. In our region:

  • Nearly half of the 1 million uninsured in the state of Illinois, reside in Cook County
  • Cook County ranks as one of the least healthy counties in the state based on length of life, healthy behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment
  • 1/3 of Chicago youth report feelings of sadness that lasted for two weeks or more, directly impacting their ability to learn, focus and thrive
  • 19% of all Chicago Public School children are obese
Health: The Challenge

United Way is working to build stronger neighborhoods across the region by fighting for:

Every person in every neighborhood to have access to physical and mental health care and preventative programs to provide better futures.
