Senior Manager, Community Engagement

The Senior Manager, Community Engagement is accountable for managing United Way’s Neighborhood Network strategy in 4-5 selected communities throughout the Chicago region. The Senior Manager, Community Engagement position is a community facing role and will collaborate closely with the Community Impact, Partner Engagement, Resource Development, and Marketing & Communication teams. This role will also collaborate with Community Impact colleagues and other organizations across the region to direct additional resources into Neighborhood Networks through capacity building, including grant resources, pro-bono assistance, corporate and community volunteers, government resources and advocacy efforts.


  • Advance the Neighborhood Network strategy in “Seed Stage” communities by providing strategic planning and technical assistance, as well as other targeted capacity building support, including fundraising, advocacy, succession planning, program alignment, and community engagement.
  • Support development, coordination and implementation of collective impact model for Neighborhood Networks through active participation in steering committee or other leadership structure.
  • Work with Senior Manager, Data Strategy to ensure continuous improvement is consistently practiced across Networks.
  • Ensure lead agencies execute annual workplans and remain in compliance with United Way grant agreements in collaboration with Senior Director, Operations.
  • Establish relationships and credibility among community leadership, advocates, and residents
  • Mobilize government, non-profit, small business, and other community players around common community goals; build on community plans and goals already in place.
  • Coordinate all the quarterly Neighborhood Network Cohort Meetings, including planning agenda, securing guest presenters, and meeting logistics, with support from CI Project manager.
  • Collaborate with United Way internal teams to create a plan for wrapping volunteers and other non-financial resources into assigned Networks.
  • Assist Community Engagement Director with strategic direction and Neighborhood Network planning.
  • Assist with identifying and brokering additional funding sources.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred, with 5-7 years of related work experience managing nonprofit partnerships, building and implementing strategic plans, engaging community residents in planning processes, , and offering capacity building support/trainings in one or more of the areas listed above.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation), ability to think strategically and translate and implement plan in action.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining the goals of the department and balancing the needs of community
  • Demonstrates good judgment, decision-making skills with an ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, grantees, and volunteers.
  • Direct experience working with coalitions and/or community-based collaborators and a strong network of community relationships.
  • Proven experience mobilizing sustainable, community-wide engagement efforts in the health and human services arena for low income communities.
  • Experienced group facilitator and consensus builder with diverse audiences.

  • Experienced in coaching people in developing management skills.
  • The ability to multi-task and prioritize concurrent projects and day-to-day tasks within a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in marketing and promotion of community- based programs preferred but not required.
  • Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
