Defining Moments: Triumphing Through Adversity The Northwest Suburban United Way Women’s Leadership Council is proud to present an afternoon of discussion with local women who have triumphed through adversity. The networking  luncheon, taking place September 22, features a panel of the following leaders in our community. Lori Parker: President of American Steelworks – Lori left her job of nine years after learning that her son’s late-onset autism was not improving under the current educational system.     She became an educational warrior for the rights of special needs children in Illinois, setting precedents felt nationally.    Ms. Parker  has over 15 years experience in the construction industry- development through closing – with a primary focus on developing interdisciplinary strategies to develop new markets and promote industry advancement.     Catherine Lee: International Entrepreneur, Local Community Activist, Professor, Homemaker, Mother and Political Candidate-  Catherine has been a leader among women her entire life. Suddenly faced with changing life circumstances and children ready for college, Catherine returned to the formal workforce after a 20+ year absence. Her perseverance and creativity have led to global success in cross-cultural workforce development which she chronicles with warmth and humor in  her book,    The New Rules of Negotiation: Building Relationships, Earning Trust, and Creating Influence Around the World.   Retired Colonel Jill Morgenthaler: A woman of many firsts. She was one of the first women to enter ROTC and to train as an equal with men;   the first female company commander in the Army Security Agency Group Korea;  the first female battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command and the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division, commanding hundreds of Soldiers across six states.   In Illinois, Colonel Morgenthaler was the first woman to lead homeland security.   Overcoming many obstacles in her career, she has survived and thrived as a leader.
