As part of a nationwide “Senate Call-in Day” led by United Way Worldwide, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago is urging Illinois residents to call their Senators and ask that healthcare coverage for all Americans be protected on Monday, January 23.
The Affordable Care Act not only provides affordable and accessible coverage, but also protects ALL Americans, ensuring that you can’t be charged more based on health status or gender, that insurance companies can’t drop you when you are sick, that you can’t be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and that children under 26 can be covered under a parent’s plan.
The Affordable Care Act must not be repealed without a simultaneous replacement plan that guarantees affordable and accessible coverage for all, and leaves all consumer protections in place. In Illinois alone, more than 1 million people received health insurance under the Affordable Care Act—almost 1 in 10 people in the state who stand to lose affordable, comprehensive and sometimes life-saving coverage. There are also economic consequences if the ACA is repealed without a replacement plan; it could lead to the loss of millions of jobs nationally and a loss of 114,000 jobs in Illinois. Illinois could lose nearly $50 billion in federal funding and face major budget cuts.
