Nora was living in an apartment in Des Plaines with her two young daughters. She was working two minimum wage jobs and struggling to make ends meet. She had mounting debt and became unable to afford her rent. With no family locally to turn to for help, Nora and her daughters became homeless.
Nora contacted a United Way partner agency that provides emergency shelter and support services. The next day, Nora and her two small children moved into the agency’s shelter. With the support of the shelter, Nora was able to save her income tax refunds and part of her earnings to eliminate her debt, improve her credit score and start saving.
Nora’s case worker at the shelter helped her apply for a 1st-time buyers program with IHDA and another grant assistance program, which allowed her to recently purchase her own home for herself and her girls. Now, Nora and her daughters have a safe place to live and hope for the future.
Nora’s story—and thousands more like it—changed for the better because of you.
