YLS Member Spotlight: Michael Henry
Why did you join YLS, and what is your current role?
I joined YLS to primarily get involved in my community, with the added benefit of expanding my professional and social network. I’m currently a Volunteer Committee member and will be the Vice Chair for that committee starting in July.
What is your favorite memory with United Way to date?
So far, my favorite experience with United Way was participating in a volunteer event last year at Victory Gardens, a “food desert” on the South Side. We planted a garden of vegetables and it was so refreshing to literally see a difference in the neighborhood which allowed its residents to finally have access to fresh produce.
What got you interested and involved with the United Way?
There are several organizations that young people can get involved in, but the YLS difference is that you can be a part of a network of young professionals that is commited to sustained community involvement. I was looking for an organization where I could participate in events continuously throughout the year and expand my network with others of similar interests.
Why do you continue to stay involved and how?
I continue my involvement in United Way because I believe that a group of individuals can accomplish quite a bit if they work together. This past year alone, YLS has accumulated hundreds of volunteer hours, thousands of dollars in donations, and hosted numerous events throughout the city. As a member of the Volunteer Committee, I help to plan and organize the volunteer events for our members.
What would you say to someone interested in joining YLS?
It’s a fantastic opportunity to give back to your community! It really is a unique organization in that it has a staff dedicated to help YLS members organize community events and develop themselves both professionally and civically.
