The United Way Born Learning Trail is an interactive, playful and visible community engagement tool, designed to help parents, caregivers and communities support early learning. The Trail is a community change strategy, helping boost children’s language and literacy skills — and encouraging families to get active.
Born Learning Trails help boost a child’s language and literacy skills through fun and games — important components of early childhood learning. Born Learning Trails are designed to offer parents, caregivers and communities support in the area of early childhood education, in addition to encouraging families to get active. Studies show that children who enter Kindergarten with the social, emotional and cognitive skills needed for success are more likely to do well in school, graduate, and go do college.
At the Trail, there are several skill developing activities for children to play on — such as hopscotch with numbers, shapes, and ABC’s.
- Watch! Stop! Learn! Play! Encourages the caregiver to follow the child’s lead, building the child’s curiosity and confidence.
- See! Say! Point! Pretend! Encourages playfulness with letters and sounds, building pre-literacy skills.
- Jump! Clap! Skip! More! Encourages physical activity and gross motor skills, which are important for kindergarten.
- Look! Listen! Touch! Think! Encourages exploration of nature, building a child’s problem-solving skills.
